- Fashion Diary: Quarterbacking the red carpet
The fashion community in Los Angeles has tripled, maybe even quadrupled, now that the Golden Globes are upon us. The world's finest jewel-encrusted clutches and cuff links, slinky gowns and tuxedo shirts are being messengered around the city for celebrities to consider (eeny, meeny, miny, moe). And publicists for all the major fashion houses -- Chanel, Giorgio Armani and Dolce & Gabbana -- are standing at the ready at their hotels to hot-foot it to fittings with tailors in tow.
As for quarterbacking the red carpet, rumor has it that blue will be a hot hue for gowns, and that last year's recession guilt is over. In other words, bring on the bling.
If the publicity tour for "Nine" is any indication, at least some of the lovely ladies from that film will be wearing Chopard. (Chopard jewelry was also worn by characters in the film, so some sort of deal must have been struck.) Since Cartier is co-hosting the NBC Universal after-party, I'm guessing we'll see some Cartier sparklers on the cast of "The Office" or "30 Rock." Julianne Moore, the new face of Bulgari, is likely to be draped in jewels by that brand.
And I'm gonna wager that Tom Ford (who directed the film "A Single Man," for which Moore is nominated) will whip up something special for his leading lady. (He is eager to get back into women's wear, after all.) For Colin Firth, Tom Ford men's wear is a slam dunk. Brad Pitt is always in TF, too. But I hear Jeff Bridges is expected to go with a John Varvatos tux.
Since Marion Cotillard has starred in Lady Dior ads for going on two years now, no doubt she will be Dior's lady on Sunday. That leaves her out of the running for Marchesa, the eveningwear line belonging to Harvey Weinstein's wife, Georgina Chapman. Films flying the Weinstein flag ("Nine," "Inglourious Basterds" and "A Single Man") received 12 Golden Globe nominations this year. Weinstein is a difficult man to say "no" to, so I'm sure Marchesa will make quite a red carpet showing. Who's a friend-of-Harvey up for grabs? Diane Kruger, Nicole Kidman, Fergie, Penelope Cruz, Kate Hudson, Sophia Loren and on and on.
Thankfully, there are a few wild cards. If last year's new "It" girl was Freida Pinto, this year it's Carey Mulligan from "An Education." Everyone's dying to dress her. Gabourey Sidibe ("Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire") and Lea Michele ("Glee") are also likely to get a lot of attention, as is Sandra Bullock, who had a very good 2009.
Meanwhile this weekend, the freebies will flowing all over town. At the Four Seasons Hotel, HBO is hosting a swag suite for celebrities with Rich Soil Clothing (Lamar Odom is a fan), Camacho cigars and Ila organic face oils. (A strange combo, no?) Smartwater will be served and Neil Patrick Harris and Jane Krakowski are expected to stop by.
The Peninsula is the site of the "Oh Canada" gift lounge, featuring lifestyle products from the great white north, including Swarovski crystal-covered sheepskin mukluks by Sweet Pedtooties (you can't make this stuff up) and samples of Icewine.
And god forbid the purse dogs be left out. At Buddha Bark, a lounge being held in the garden setting of hairstylist Chaz Dean's studio, celebs and their furry friends will be treated to a doggie fashion show, pet psychics and canine massages.

- Deal under $60: Clare Vivier's bags are 'Red Hot' for Target once more
Echo Park-based bag maker Clare Vivier was approached by Target to create a clutch in her unique soft fold-over style for its January Red Hot online shop in conjunction with Daily Candy, which sold out in three days. Of course, Vivier, who makes her bags in Burbank from remnant leather, can quickly turn around 100 bags with a few days' notice -- not bad for someone lacking a ginormous overseas manufacturing facility.
For those who missed the first round of the Clarevivier (that's her line's name) $59.99 snake embossed taupe and gray leather clutch with a red tassel, Target again commissioned Vivier to produce another round of bags, now in black and taupe, available online Monday through Jan. 31, that features a "red hot" tassel and great value for something made by hand domestically.

- Retailers and fashion brands do their part to help Haiti
While shopping and material possessions are the furthest thing from anyone's mind amid the horrific aftermath of Tuesday's earthquake in Haiti, several brands and retailers are mobilizing their resources to help the relief efforts. Here is a list of companies getting involved and how you too can help.
The Soles4Souls charity has set up donation stations for gently worn shoes at all Sport Chalet locations. People can drop off shoes at any Sport Chalet today through Jan. 31. Shoes will be shipped to the most affected areas of Haiti.
Vans shoes is donating 30 containers carrying 10,000 pairs of work boots, rain boots and children's shoes to earthquake survivors. The Cypress-based shoe company also teamed up with Soles4Souls.
Soles4 Souls is committing 250,000 pairs of shoes from U.S. shoe brands and store owners. It originally pledged 100,000, but discovered it still wasn't enough. To distribute the goods, Soles4Souls teamed up with Operation Compassion, a charity that transports and distributes the aid, which along with Vans shoes, includes packages -- from a footwear industry effort -- providing food, bottled water, baby necessities, medical supplies, tents, blankets and flashlights.
"With mounting public health concerns and conditions in the area, something as simple as shoes can make a huge impact on relief efforts," says Kevin Bailey, president of Vans, in a statement.

Resurrection boutique is holding a sale through Jan. 31 both in-store and online, taking 70% off retail on vintage finds with 10% of all sale proceeds going to Haiti Emergency Relief Fund. Labels on sale include Chanel, Comme des Garcons, Alaia, Stephen Sprouse, Yves Saint Laurent, Thierry Mugler and others.
Earlier this month, Timberland released a line of boots designed by Wyclef Jean to benefit his Yele Haiti organization. Originally, $2 from the sale of each pair of boots was going toward reforestation in Haiti, but efforts have been redirected since Tuesday to help earthquake victims.
[UPDATED 8:55 p.m.] Also, perfumer Bond No. 9 will donate 10% of proceeds from the fragrance the Scent of Peace to the American Red Cross to assist communities affected by the earthquake. The perfume is available at Saks Fifth Avenue, Beverly Hills.
