- Digging through our closets: Marijuana's new high life in popular culture
Before heading out to the holiday sales, gift receipt in hand, get some fashion inspiration from some of our readers' favorite features from 2009:
Barneys New York in Beverly Hills had its $78 "Hashish" candles in Jonathan Adler pots, Los Angeles had its THC Expo hemp and art show, Showtime had its fifth season of "Weeds." This was a big year for pot.
"The stoner is the new drunk," said Robert Thompson, a professor of television and pop culture at the University of Syracuse S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, in an August article.
In the article, Times staff writer Adam Tschorn talked about our culture's newly developing acceptance (and, dare we say, obsession) with weed, as fashion, films, TV and politicians all began to embrace it, despite its illegality under federal law. Read the full article here.

Read the details at the end of this story about all the changes photographer and retoucher Michael Kubeisy made on the photo above of Debbie Johnson.

But designers, with their creativity and edginess, can take it to a whole new level and this year on the runways, they did: with kicks boasting extreme platforms, animal-inspired shapes (like Alexander McQueen's armadillo-like snakeskin boots, above), and pin-thin-heeled boots.
