- Corey Lynn Calter hosts a chic dinner
Corey Lynn Calter amped up Los Angeles Fashion Week by hosting one of its most refined gatherings last night. The L.A. contemporary designer -- who's known for her whimsical prints and flirty silhouettes -- hosted a fashion presentation, followed by a sit-down dinner, in the form of a roving short film. The event was held inside a cavernous storefront owned by antique store Rose Tarlow on Melrose Avenue. Guests including Shiva Rose, Rachael Leigh Cook, Decades owner Cameron Silver, retailer Hillary Rush and E! Network host Amanda Luttrell Garrigus watched as models dressed in Calter's Spring 2010 collection marched across boxes of light projected on three of the room's four walls. When a model spanned one screen, she would "walk" onto the next -- creating the illusion that each catwalker was cutting a semi-circular path around the room.As models reached the middle screen, they were asked questions about themselves, such as, "If you could be anyone, who would you be?" (the hilarious answer was "Oprah"); and "If you could go anywhere, where would you go?" ("Fiji"). The collection, full of feminine tops, shorts, skirts and maxi dresses in retro-feeling prints, was classic Calter -- feminine and vintage-vibed, with a hip-girl's edge.
"That is the most inspirational thing I've seen in a long time," said Rush as the crowd moved into a backroom set up with two long, candle-lit tables -- where dinner was served.
"We wanted to do something different and fun," said Calter, who wore a stunning peach-colored tiered maxi dress. "We came up with the questions because I thought, we need another focus other than the revolving runway. I said, 'Let's just ask the questions and see what happens!'"

Public Service sounds like the latest traffic court penalty, but it's actually a new men's boutique behind Shorty's Barber Shop on Fairfax Avenue.
Owners Lauren Megson and Chris Bair, who also owns Shorty's, decided to convert the rear of the barbershop into a retail area that resembles a 1970s rec room with table tennis, air hockey and gymnasium wood floors.
Public Service stocks shirts, outerwear and leathers from L.A.-based brands NSF, Ever, Apolis Activism and Shades of Greige. Angelenos can't get enough of loungewear, so the boutique carries an large assortment of hoodies, henleys and sweat pants from LnA, Alternative Apparel and Plain Gravy.
Gift merch (yes, that season is upon us) includes novelty graphic T-shirts ($30-40), Comme des Garcons fragrances, Ray-Ban sunglasses, Brixton fedoras and a contraption called Clocky, which is an alarm clock that falls on the floor and keeps ringing before you have a chance to knock it off the nightstand.
On Thursday, Public Service celebrates its grand opening with an open-bar celebration from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Call store to RSVP.
755 N. Fairfax Ave., Los Angeles, (323) 951-1191. 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday to Friday; 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. www.publicservicela.com

Переслать - Jason Wu draws a stylish crowd at Neiman Marcus
Jason Wu, the 27-year-old designer whose star has risen considerably since Michelle Obama wore one of his frothy creations during the inaugural ball, drew a very stylish crowd while showing his spring 2010 collection at Neiman Marcus last night.
His friend and perennial fashion plate Diane Kruger hosted the event dressed in a one-shoulder-black-with-teal-polka-dots cocktail frock, accented with Roger Vivier heels and Eddie Borgo bracelets. "We met at Cannes, and we've been friends ever since," said Kruger, who certainly has carte blanche to her share of designer duds, having been the face of Chanel and Louis Vuitton but has recently favored Wu's creations. A few other starlets donned his designs, looking more grown-up and put together than their late teen years would suggest. Katie Cassidy, Jessica Stroup and Amber Heard all wore short dresses by Wu. Heard's high blond ponytail, porcelain skin and bright red pout made her look like a dead ringer for Scarlett Johansson.
Star wattage aside, the crowd of fashion industry insiders, stylists and socialites took in the collection worn by models posing around the department store floor. Everything from a simple, solid colored emerald green dress to a pale pink and white feathered cocktail number came out during the event, perpetuating Wu's reputation for making refined and feminine clothes. But unlike his past collections, several pieces in his spring line had a few raw and rough edges -- a touch purposely put there by the designer who played around with the juxtaposition of hard and soft. "I was really inspired by [sculptor] Tara Donovan and Tim Burton," says Wu. "It's sculptural versus stitches. I like the contrast between romantic and rough around the edges." Judging by the turnout for the Beverly Hills event and his rapidly growing celebrity following, it seems his fans will too.

Переслать - Yotam Solomon goes super sexy for Spring 2010 [UPDATED]
Yotam Solomon has been busy this fashion season. The 22-year-old L.A.-based designer showed his Spring 2010 collection during a Downtown Los Angeles Fashion Week presentation at the MOCA Geffen Contemporary space last week, followed by a full-blown cocktail party and roving fashion presentation for the same collection on Wednesday night at the Chateau Marmont.
[UPDATED 11:26 a.m. Oct. 28: A previous version of this post spelled the designer's last name Soloman]
In both cases, he eschewed a traditional runway show. "I think a presentation is a more modern way to show collections," he explained at the Chateau Marmont event. "And this way, I get to be out here with everyone, instead of [hanging] around backstage like an idiot."
Guests at the Chateau Marmont soiree, which was hosted inside a private bungalow, were encouraged to interact with the clutch of willowy models swanning gracefully around the room.
"Stop them if you want to see something closer -- that's the point," instructed the designer.
Most outfits only took a minute to take in -- the ultra-feminine collection was all about the super-short: abbreviated cocktail dresses jutting away from the body, marrying '50s taffeta fabrications with an '80s party feel; short bandage-like skirts paired with bejeweled tops; and a few form-fitting '80s-inspired frocks that were beyond short and tight and that felt, regrettably, a little too much "working girl."
But there was magic in the details -- sewn-on glass beads and gemstones (sometimes wrapped in fabric, sometimes exposed) on intricately detailed tops and dresses. "This collection is about playing with light and shining through the economy," said the young FIDM graduate. "And the glass beads on the dresses are so thick, they don't break. I've tested them."
